Meet Salli & Nate

Nate Padavick and Salli Swindell are a brother-and-sister Design and Illustration team who have been working together for over 10 years as Studio SSS. Together they founded the nationally renowned websites: They Draw and Cook and They Draw and Travel.

Nate and Salli came up with the idea of They Draw & Cook while on a family vacation. Nate was trying to recreate a favorite dish – fettuccine with figs in a balsamic butter sauce – while Salli sat at the counter with her watercolors, painting the crate of figs. This led them to realize how fun it was to illustrate food. They then started talking about creating a little recipe book for friends, family, and clients. They asked some of their artist pals to help, but never got enough recipes to justify printing a book, so Nate built a blog while Salli started to spread the word, and it spread fast! They Draw & Cook now contains the biggest and best collection of illustrated recipes anywhere.

They Draw and Cook is not just a platform to highlight Salli’s work. Studio SSS strategically built this blog to become a platform for discovering and connecting with other illustrators. By bringing artists together from a wide range of styles, and connecting them around a singular purpose, hundreds of illustrators have been empowered to launch their own freelance ventures.

In addition, Nate & Salli have created hundreds of magazine and book illustrations, thousands of greeting card designs, and, of course, countless illustrated recipes! They have designed for some of the largest brands in the world, including American Greetings, Papyrus, Better Homes & Gardens, The WallStreet Journal, Kraft Foods, Lowes Home Improvement, Volvo and Pottery Barn.

The Schedule:

Session One – Pin-Point Your Unique Style

Every successful illustrator has a style that is distinctive to them. Salli will give you an inside look at how she developed her style, and show you how to figure out what is unique about your work. Identifying your niche will help you leverage your unique style and build your business in a way that attracts the type of clients who are sure to love your work. Salli will also help you understand how to use your unique style to stand out from other designers.

In this session, Salli will help you:

– Find what’s unique about your style.
– Identify who your target audience is.
– Leverage your style in a way that reaches your niche.

Session Two – Building a community around your work

Most illustrators have a website or online portfolio, but few illustrators have gone to the trouble of building a community of artists around their work. Salli and Nate strategically leveraged their work and the work of their peers to build a platform that supported the careers of hundred of artists around the world.

In this session, Salli will show you:

– How to creatively leverage your work to build an online community that supports the growth of your business.
– New ways to leverage your online portfolio to create conversation around your work in a way that helps you attract new clients.

Session Three – Leveraging your platform to land new clients

Nate and Salli have managed two blogs, full-time, for five years, while never making a dime from their sites; however, the money and time invested in these platforms has undeniably paid off in new client referrals and opportunities that would have never come along otherwise. Finding work as a freelance illustrator can initially be tough. It can be a run-around to get everyone to view your portfolio, much less close a deal on working together. Once you have created a name for yourself and have a following, however, it becomes much easier.

In this session, Salli will show you:

– How to leverage your online platforms to attract new clients.
– How to start building your client followings.
– An inside look at how experienced designers negotiate and close new clients.
